Available Family History DocumentationThe Births and Deaths Registration Act and the Marriage Act of 1836 was passed by the British Government for the provision of recording the births, marriages and deaths of individuals in England and Wales. Registration has always been compulsory but failure to do so did not result in a penalty until 1874 - hence a large number of early births went unregistered. Before 1837, we have to rely on church records for Baptisms, Marriages and Burials.
I can provide you with copies of local records, where available, including Census Returns 1841 - 1901, Parish Registers for Baptisms, Banns, Marriages and Buriels, Cemetary Records, Electoral Registers, Wills, Newspapers and Trade Directories.Copies of marriages from these local records (where available) are much nicer and cheaper than a certificate, they are taken from the church records completed at the time of the marriage and will contain either the signature or mark of the Bride, Groom and the Witnesses. Census records are produced in the UK every ten years - the first census to contain names was produced in 1841. To ensure confidentiallity, census records are closed for 100 years - so the 1901 census is the latest that is currently available. The next census to be released will be the 1911 census, which will be published in 2011. What I will need from youWhat do you already know about your ancestors? The more you can tell me, the better. A good starting point is a marriage certificate for your parents - if you don't have this, don't worry - we can get one.
Birth Certificates tell you the name of the child being registered, the names of the parents (including the maiden name of the mother), where they lived the occupation of the father and the name of the person registering the birth |
